Virtual reality headset helps teens and their parents drop bad driving habits
There are more educational ways to learn about the dangers of distracted driving than watching hours of Russian dash-cam videos. Toyota is using the new Oculus Rift virtual reality headset as a part of its TeenDrive365 program to educate teens and parents about encountering avoidable and unavoidable distractions while driving. And as a part of this program, Toyota has created a virtual simulator program coupled with stationary car that replicates a busy city, also providing plenty of computer-simulated distractions.
The distracted-driving simulator re-creates driving through a busy metropolis, with the 360-degree tracking of the Oculus Rift allowing the driver to look around. That includes looking at the text messages, the radio, and the virtual passengers inside the car. All of the above distractions can challenge a driver even in a relatively empty road enviroment, but the Oculus Rift driving simulator will seek to push the drivers' attention spans to their breaking point. The only difference will be that in the simulator, drivers will be able to start all over once something goes horribly wrong.
