ECOBOOST EXPLORER BEST FOR POLICE SUV DUTY
The Michigan State Police released the results of its annual vehicle dynamics test, a competition pitting all the possible cruiser candidates on a track to figure out which one works best for police duty.
This year’s competitors -- all returning -- included V6 and V8 versions of the Chevy Caprice, a V6 Chevy Impala and two- and four-wheel-drive Tahoes. Dodge sent two V8 Chargers and two V6s, each with different axle ratios. Ford brought three Taurus sedans and two Explorers with both 3.5-liter EcoBoost and 3.7-liter naturally aspirated engines.
The V6 Dodge Charger took the braking contest with a projected stopping distance from 60 mph of just 124.8 feet. For the sport utilities, the EcoBoost Explorer topped the rest at 132.5 feet. The front-wheel-drive Taurus had the longest stopping distance for the sedans, the two-wheel-drive Tahoe for the SUVs.
